Picnic at Hanging Rock..

Yesterday I finally saw Peter Weir's "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (1975). The film has been on my radar for a long, long time, but I never got around to seeing it. After Rue Morgue named Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel as "must read" I figured it was time to move the film to the top of the Netflix queue. I am so glad I did because this is a really creepy film. And while it is not "scary," it did give me nightmares all night long. I didn't sleep worth a shit.

This is the actual Hanging Rock in Australia. I was under the impression that this was based on a true story, which is what Joan Lindsay and the filmmakers want you to believe. It is not. She wrote the book as a "false document" and refused to confirm or deny that the story was true her whole life. Set in 1900, it is about a group of schoolgirls who go for a day trip out to Hanging Rock. Three of them, along with a chaperone, don't return. A week later, one of the girls is found in the rocks, asleep with no memory of what happened. And that is it. No explanation, no answers. It is really unnerving. Anyway, my nightmares consisted of possible explanations of what happened to the girls. And they went on all night. What is cool is that the novel became an obsession of sorts for other writers, and there was actually a book published a few years ago of possible explanations. Lindsay herself wrote an "ending" to the novel with an answer to what happened to the girls, but wisely took it out before the book was published. Three years after her death the 6 exorcised pages were published. Anyway I spent all morning checking it out on the Internet, and the best site I found is, or course, from some Ghost Hunters.

What do I do now??

I finished the final book in the "Twilight" series (the teenage vampire books.) Thank god the movie comes out in November and the "companion" book comes out in December, because I wouldn't know what to do with myself. Does anyone know of any good teenage zombie books I can obsess over? How about a good teenage ghost story? I mean really. What has happened to me? My only consolation is that EVERY woman I know is reading these books. I have to go now. I am going to Target to see if I can buy a "Twilight" Trapper Keeper or something...

The Orange Menace meets Abbott and Costello

The cat and I watched Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein last night. I have never been a huge Abbott and Costello fan, but this film was really great and made me very happy. Bela Lugosi is great in it. You know this film was only the second time he played Dracula. He played other Vampires in other films, but he only played Dracula twice...

Costello sorta annoys me, but I love Abbott. I love a good straight man, and he was probably the best. Last time I saw this film I was a kid, and I remember it scaring me (I was horrified by Frankenstein's Monster). As an adult I see how the humor is quite "saucy." If I was not in the middle of a netflix obsession with Vampires I would go on an Abbott and Costello jaunt. But that will have to wait.

I really wanted to see "Hamlet 2" today, but it is not playing anywhere around here. It was co-written by Pam Brady, who writes for South Park. I want to see it because of that, because I love Steve Coogan, and because it features underprivileged Hispanic kids performing in a play about a time-travelling Hamlet. It also has musical performances of songs entitled "Rock me Sexy Jesus" and "Raped in the Face." Put those songs together with "Boats and Ho's" and you have my soundtrack for the summer...

Only 74 days till Halloween..

Much to my delight yesterday I found out that Walgreens is already selling Halloween crap. So I spent my last dollar on this bat, my first Halloween decoration of the year.

It is because of shit like this that the Orange Menace wakes us up at 2:30am every night.

(No cats were turned into vampires during the making of this photo essay.)

Thumbs Up

I really have not laughed so hard at a movie in a long time. Sorry Heath, Robert Downey Jr. deserves the Oscar for this film. And it did not give me nightmares. "American Psycho," which I watched when I got home, did, however, give me nightmares. I hated the ending so much I kept trying to finish it in my dreams. Not even that helped the film...

Is this Bigfoot?

The big BIGFOOT press conference is being held today here in Palo Alto, right up the street from us. Unfortch it is closed to the public. I have never been a BIGFOOT fanatic. I prefer my monsters without zippers. But I have seen the supposed "picture" of the BIGFOOT body. It is awesome. It is a gorilla suit stuffed in a freezer with some animal entrails thrown on top. I can't wait to hear about the press conference.

No more Zombies

I have had it with Zombies. In the past week I have had 2 Zombie related nightmares, one so bad that I felt creepy all day. My new obsession is going to be Vampires, specifically the Mac Daddy of Vampires Dracula. I have decided this because I just saw the AWESOME 1979 version of Dracula with Frank Langella.
I have not seen it since I was a kid, and at the time I thought "whatever, it is no Last House on the Left." But when you see it as an adult you realize how cool it is.

First of all, it is definitely a Dracula for the Ladies, and in that sense it sort of reminds me of the Twilight series. Also, the production design and the score by John Williams are really over the top and absolutely wonderful. The film really has a creepy, Gothic vibe to it, which you would not expect for a film from the late 70's.

Plus, Donald Pleasence plays Dr. Seward. He is one of my favorite actors (he is Dr. Loomis after all.) In the extras feature Frank Langella talks about how he was warned that Pleasence was a "hanky" actor. Meaning that whatever scene he is in he will be doing something to focus attention on himself, whether that means playing with a hanky or eating candy, in order to get more screen time. And it is true. Throughout the whole film he is eating candy, so even when he is in the background you kind of focus in on him. Now I have to re-watch Halloween just to watch him scene stealing.

I am in Troubles...

For those of you who don't check out LOL Cats EVERYDAY like me, here is a rather good picture from the site. In other news I have to go see my Doctor this morning, and I am going to get yelled at because I have not been to see her in like 5 months. My Doctor is nice, but she kind of reminds me of a High School Vice Principal. You never want to go to her office. My Doctor actually had to call me to get me to come in. There will disappointed looks and lectures and grovelling on my part. On the plus side I don't have to go to work and I got to sleep in. Plus, I finally finished the last book I was reading so I can start "Breaking Dawn" today, which I hear is just terrible. I mean really terrible. But I am addicted. I must read it!

Like my head exploded...

Great article over at Rolling Stone about the NIN tour, which I am going to see on September 5th! It will be my third time seeing Trent and Co. That month I am also going to see Bootsy Collins (2nd time) and Children of Bodom (also the 2nd time.) You cannot say I don't have well-rounded musical taste.

Zombie Runner

There is a store opening up around the corner from my apartment called "Zombie Runner." Unfortunately it is just a running store, not a Zombie Apocalypse Survivalist Outpost. So I am not going to bother to apply.

Zombie Kittens: I want to eat your Kitten Brain....

The bird meeting has taken a turn to the dark side. A couple of days ago we noticed a dead bird hanging from the tower. It looks like it had been lynched. Still the birds meet on the tower, just ignoring their fallen companion. It has really soured me on the bird meeting. Further proof that I must stop commuting!!
